A major business venture, Stan Lee Media, resulted in stock manipulation, bankruptcy, and criminal charges. A second one, POW! Entertainment, has been repeatedly accused of malfeasance and deceit. Yet as a teenager in Coventry, Shaw was fascinated by the Gallery, traveling regularly to London to draw from those artists he found inspiring.

This engaging volume reproduces his first series of paintings on canvas, together with working drawings and an essay by the artist himself.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0401/6226/3204/files/IMG_0514_6dbf27be-a5a6-4527-81e3-7043d6f77dcd.jpg?v=1720008220
broken-glass-mies-van-der-rohe-edith-farnsworth-and-the-fight-over-a-modernist-masterpiece
Broken Glass: Mies Van Der Rohe, Edith Farnsworth, and the Fight over a Modernist Masterpiece (Non-mint) (Rare edition)

Alex Beam

Hardcover | 14.73 x 3.05 x 21.84 cm | 337 pp

Random House | 2020 | 9780399592713

Rare & Collectible

The true story of the intimate relationship that gave birth to the Farnsworth House, a masterpiece of twentieth-century architecture and disintegrated into a bitter feud over love, money, gender, and the very nature of art.

In 1945, Edith Farnsworth asked the German architect Mies van der Rohe, already renowned for his avant-garde buildings, to design a weekend home for her outside of Chicago. Edith was a woman ahead of her times; unmarried, she was a distinguished medical researcher, as well as an accomplished violinist, translator, and poet. The two quickly began spending weekends together, talking philosophy, Catholic mysticism, and, of course, architecture over wine-soaked picnic lunches. Their personal and professional collaboration would produce the Farnsworth House, one of the most important works of architecture of all time, a blindingly original structure made up almost entirely of glass and steel.

But the minimalist marvel, built in 1951, was plagued by cost overruns and a sudden chilling of the two friends' mutual affection. Though the building became world famous, Edith found it impossible to live in, because of its constant leaks, flooding, and complete lack of privacy. Alienated and aggrieved, she lent her name to a public campaign against Mies, cheered on by Frank Lloyd Wright. Mies, in turn, sued her for unpaid monies. The ensuing lengthy trial heard evidence of purported incompetence by an acclaimed architect, and allegations of psychological cruelty and emotional trauma. A commercial dispute litigated in a rural Illinois courthouse became a trial of modernist art and architecture itself.

Interweaving personal drama and cultural history, Alex Beam presents a stylish, enthralling narrative tapestry, illuminating the fascinating history behind one of the twentieth-century's most beautiful and significant architectural projects.

PLEASE NOTE: This book is a NON-MINT item. NON-MINT books are in less than 100% mint condition. Sickert was a prolific draughtsman throughout his career and used his drawings as preparatory works for his paintings. Drawn from nature, his sketches capture the intricacies of architectures, the infectious thrill of performance, and even the nuances of a subject’s character. Sickert frequently visited locations again and again, investing long periods of time to detail certain elements or even redraw entire views. In doing so, he was able to develop ideas and concepts before an image was possibly transferred to canvas. As a mentor and teacher to a younger generation of artists he also attempted to teach the use of preparatory drawings to his protégés, steering the course of arts practice in Britain.

Stored in Tate’s collection and archive, this selection of drawings not only serve as a record of Sickert’s creative process but express his engagement with the world around him, both in Britain and abroad.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0401/6226/3204/files/IMG_1073_078a6295-12b9-4a66-8707-ee4e0489a7ae.jpg?v=1721645356
walter-sickert
Walter Sickert

Emma Chambers

Hardcover | 27.31 x 3.18 x 22.86 cm | 240 pp

Tate Publishing | 2022 | 9781849768214

Walter Sickert was one of the most influential artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A sixty-year investigation into both developed out of his fascination with the unconscious mind as well as an exploration (and acceptance) of his own sexuality.
