Manuals contain knowledge, instructions and practical solutions. Irish photographer Jan McCullough is fascinated by advice. A book from the 1950s entitled "How to make the home you want" sparked off an unusual project. Inspired by the suggestions contained therein to improve his home, McCullough decides to rent an empty apartment in a suburb of Belfast and to go online to search for self-proclaimed experts to help her set it up.
She Googled "How to make a home" which started lively discussions between people who offered their support and were happy to provide information. The conversation notes were collected for two months and the emergence of the new home documented in photographs.
The result is a kind of long-term study of living and working in a strange house, which was ultimately not designed according to individual needs, but corresponded to the wishes of an anonymous crowd.
