Hambling's paintings possess a candour and emotiveness that is at odds with much contemporary art, and these qualities re-emerge in a recent cycle of sculptures titled Aftermath. The book features essays by James Cahill on War Requiem and Aftermath and their place within Hambling's wider oeuvre, drawing upon extensive interviews with the artist.
