The police band in Suriname cannot pride itself on being the oldest band in Suriname, but it can take pride in having become an integral part of the social and cultural life in Surinamese society. The band has always been of great significance to the musical life in Suriname not only because of the weekly concerts they gave in The Park and on the former Government Square but also because of their repertoire.
Photographer and artist Sara Blokland followed The Police Band of Suriname and pictured, in an untraditional way the history of the band and the people encountered by them.
Sara Blokland (b. 1969) is a visual artist, independent researcher and curator of photography. She lives and works in Amsterdam. As a visual artist she is predominately working with photography. Her work reflects on the complicated role of this medium in relation to the histories of individuals, the concept of ‘family’ and culture heritage. Blokland’s films and photographic works have a strong focus on the portrait and landscape as part of identity and memory.
