The mid to late 1980s indie scenes in Britain from C86 to Shoegaze are a lost moment in music history. Theres been much coverage of punk, of post-punk and of the acid-house rave era of the early 90s, but the scene surrounding independent guitar-based music of the mid-80s has been largely overlooked. A Scene In Between looks at the fashions, personalities, and youth cultures of that era.
Bands featured include: Television Personalities, Spacemen 3, My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Primal Scream, Talulah Gosh, Loop, The Pastels, Vaselines and more obscure bands such as The Shop Assistants, Boy Hairdressers, Flatmates and countless others.
Sam Knee has reconnected with a vast network of people and resources, to unearth literally hundreds of previously unpublished photographs of the people, clubs and bands of the time. Taking a sartorial angle, he looks at the anoraks, oversized jumpers, leather trousers, bowlcut hairdos, blouse shirts, stripey tees box jackets that were so popular at the time. He also uses his understanding of music history to look at the diverse influences behind the looks and the sounds of the bands from the sharply dressed mods of the 60s to West coast and Texas psychedelia. Contributions from members of the Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine make this a must have for music and fashion aficionados alike.

A book full of ideas so easily forgottenl or overlooked as a painter. A good reminder of techniques that relate to the use of acrylics. Very straightforward, well illustrated. An excellent buy.

As a man much wittier than I said of Les Coleman and his work, "Les is More."
Indeed we all agree that he was.
Such a wonderful collection of title from across the arts and culture spectrum. I absolutely love that you offer books that delve into the niches of the art world, limited run artist led publishing, artists practicing away from the mainstream and so on. The prices are a bonus, and the quick service is outstanding! I for one will keep coming back. Thank you!!!

I love this book. It's very readable, informative and well written, covering one of the most exciting and revolutionary periods of art history. The author includes glimpses of how the artists' early work fared at auction and the public's reaction to the new art movements in exhibitions.

Totally splashed out as it was my birthday on the two Taschen XXL Amazing Spiderman books. Both are excellent, came in their own ASM printed cardboard boxes that were well packed and shipped in a bigger box. Books About Art kept me informed about the delivery every step of the way.
HUGE and beautiful book, sent in a specially printed Amazing Spiderman box. Excellent service from Books About Art.
