Illustrated with dozens of "lost" photos and images from the UK record shop's glorious heyday, Going for a Song chronicles the entire history of the UK record shop. Aaward winning author Garth Cartwright details how record shops across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland served as oracles for music lovers.
And what stories these shops can tell! Liverpool's NEMS launches The
Beatles on the world. A drunk, young Bob Dylan records in the Soho basement of
Dobell's Jazz, Blues & Folk shop. Levy's of Whitechapel begins selling Yiddish 78s
and ends representing Motown's UK operation. David Bowie, Dusty Springfield
and Pete Burns all serve apprenticeships in vinyl emporiums. Mods flock to
Transat Imports for soul 45s. Rita & Benny's is the UK's first ska shop. While
London swings, East End gangsters use Carnaby Street record shops to shift
10,000 stolen Simon & Garfunkel LPs. Stanley Kubrick films A Clockwork Orange
in The Chelsea Drugstore. Virgin and Beggars Banquet's founders build empires
out of rock shops. Rock On fuels punk while Rough Trade, Small Wonder and
Good Vibrations service the revolution. Reggae gets heavy in the dub shops and
Black Market Records rules rave with the bottest dance 12"s. Then things fall apart...
Told here for the first time is a secret history of the UK as witnessed through
the nation's record shops.
"From wax cylinders to dubstep, Garth Cartwright lovingly chronicles the rise, fall and resurrection of the UK's record shops. Complete with larger-than-life wide boy skullduggery, behind-the-counter shenanigans and appearances from Prince Buster and B.B. King (amongst many of your favourite musicians). Superb!" Such a beautiful book for the price
I've cut the sketchbooks open to give me A3 sheets. Love the colours
Top service
Does exactly what it says on the title.
Was looking for quite a niche book and it was a decent price and came quickly. Can't fault the service

Well packaged, arrived quickly, very pleased
Well packaged, arrived quickly, very pleased with books.
I love this book. It's very readable, informative and well written, covering one of the most exciting and revolutionary periods of art history. The author includes glimpses of how the artists' early work fared at auction and the public's reaction to the new art movements in exhibitions.
Well all I can say after my experience is what a great site and service, ordered my first set of books, and through my own mistake they were sent back, this is where they truly shone, having been in touch with them, they helped me quickly get them sent back out, I added more books to the order, they arrived with-in 2 days, perfect condition, perfect delivery. Very very happy.
Would I use again. Very very much so, yes you can buy books anywhere. BUT, would you get the service if there’s an issue. I can’t fault the way they dealt with my issue , even if it was caused by myself. All the books were pristine. A+
I love Books About Art so much I feel conflicted about reviewing them. I have told friends and they are similarly addicted to a thoughtfully curated, wide ranging selection of books that cover all kinds of culture and always arrive promptly, as described. Just don't tell anyone I said so.
Excellent book, well worth the money and in excellent condition. Delivered early than I expected can't fault this company never let's you down, thank you.
A very readable and accessible guide to pivotal and controversial works of modern art. Each movement or time period is explained with useful timelines to provide wider historical context in which to place the artists and their work. Each selected art work is explained, the reasoning behind it, and why is was considered controversial. A really clear and useful guide.
I have only recently discovered Books About Art and have been delighted with the quality of the books on offer at such good prices. I've been delighted with my purchases so far, and the service is excellent too.
