The definitive biography of Ravi Shankar, one of the most influential musicians and composers of the twentieth century, told with the cooperation of his estate, family, and friends.
For over eight decades, Ravi Shankar was India's greatest cultural ambassador. He was a groundbreaking performer and composer of Indian classical music, who brought the music and rich culture of India to the world's leading concert halls and festivals, charting the map for those who followed in his footsteps. Renowned for playing Monterey Pop, Woodstock, and the Concert for Bangladesh-and for teaching George Harrison of The Beatles how to play the sitar-Shankar reshaped the musical landscape of the 1960s across pop, jazz, and classical music, and composed unforgettable scores for movies like Pather Panchali and Gandhi.
In Indian Sun: The Life and Music of Ravi Shankar, writer Oliver Craske presents readers with the first full portrait of this legendary figure, revealing the personal and professional story of a musician who influenced-and continues to influence-countless artists. Craske paints a vivid picture of a captivating, restless workaholic-from his lonely and traumatic childhood in Varanasi to his youthful stardom in his brother's dance troupe, from his intensive study of the sitar to his revival of India's national music scene. Shankar's musical influence spread across both genres and generations, and he developed close friendships with John Coltrane, Philip Glass, Yehudi Menuhin, George Harrison, and Benjamin Britten, among many others. For ninety-two years, Shankar lived an endlessly colourful and creative life, a life defined by musical, emotional, and spiritual quests-and his legacy lives on.
Benefiting from unprecedented access to Shankar's archives, and drawing on new interviews with over 130 subjects-including his second wife and both of his daughters, Norah Jones and Anoushka Shankar- Indian Sun gives readers unparalleled insight into a man who transformed modern music as we know it today.

Well packaged, arrived quickly, very pleased with books.
I love this book. It's very readable, informative and well written, covering one of the most exciting and revolutionary periods of art history. The author includes glimpses of how the artists' early work fared at auction and the public's reaction to the new art movements in exhibitions.
Well all I can say after my experience is what a great site and service, ordered my first set of books, and through my own mistake they were sent back, this is where they truly shone, having been in touch with them, they helped me quickly get them sent back out, I added more books to the order, they arrived with-in 2 days, perfect condition, perfect delivery. Very very happy.
Would I use again. Very very much so, yes you can buy books anywhere. BUT, would you get the service if there’s an issue. I can’t fault the way they dealt with my issue , even if it was caused by myself. All the books were pristine. A+
I love Books About Art so much I feel conflicted about reviewing them. I have told friends and they are similarly addicted to a thoughtfully curated, wide ranging selection of books that cover all kinds of culture and always arrive promptly, as described. Just don't tell anyone I said so.
Excellent book, well worth the money and in excellent condition. Delivered early than I expected can't fault this company never let's you down, thank you.
A very readable and accessible guide to pivotal and controversial works of modern art. Each movement or time period is explained with useful timelines to provide wider historical context in which to place the artists and their work. Each selected art work is explained, the reasoning behind it, and why is was considered controversial. A really clear and useful guide.
I have only recently discovered Books About Art and have been delighted with the quality of the books on offer at such good prices. I've been delighted with my purchases so far, and the service is excellent too.
I was really pleased with the order I placed. Some books where gifts and the rest where for myself. Such great value and I benefited from using the free delivery offer. I was impressed with the packaging as each book was in good condition. Great communication about delivery times.
John Broadley is one of my favorite illustrators and also one of my absolute favorite books ever!
The special shipping to Switzerland arrived very quickly and the book was perfectly wrapped! I E-Mailed the owner for a request to ship the book to Switzerland and he answered really fast and was very friendly.
I'm very happy about my purchase and can only recommend it.
This is the most beautiful book recording the last days of an iconic building. A book to leave open on certain pages, to devour & enjoy as you wish.
