Logomotive is a visual tribute to the heyday of railroad graphics. Arriving in America in 1968, the London designer Ian Logan was blown away by the logos and slogans he saw on the sides of freight cars rumbling down Main Street. Between designing fabrics for Mary Quant and Jeff Banks, he went back time after time with his camera, travelling across America, wandering into freight yards to record the Route of the Eagles, the Rebel Route, the Speedway to America’s Playground and many other mesmerising advertising ideas of the day.
To this gallery of vintage Americana, the distinguished design commentator and author Jonathan Glancey brings a warm and perceptive analysis of its iconography. He shows how every aspect, from locomotives and rolling stock to advertisements and timetables, was designed to project an image of speed, efficiency and the American pioneer spirit.
In these pages you will find locomotive name plates, posters, postcards, pencil sketches and engineering drawings, stencils, lettering manuals, leaflets, badges, newspaper and magazine cuttings, brochures, timetables, coasters, enamel plaques, illuminated drumheads, tickets and passes, mascots, menu cards, dining-car place mats and designs in wood, brick, tile and concrete.
In the Foreword, the award-winning architect Norman Foster conveys his own love of trains. New to the USA as a student in the early Sixties, he was thrilled by the energy and panache of this dynamic country, its hit railroad songs and the marriage of machinery, branding, graphics, colours and lifestyle epitomised by its vast railway system.

Fantastic and speedy service
A brilliant book about a nearly-forgotten band, but thankfully this book rectifies that. Written by the surviving drummer and bassist, it is full of stories about their time in Hamburg & touring round Germany & Japan. A must for anyone who loves the Liverpool Merseybeat scene and the hard-driving music it produced.
I’m delighted that I bought a copy of David Hockney’s past icon work. Not many pages but so worthwhile! If only there were 10 stars, I would have rated this publication so highly!
Always exactly as described and delivered within 2 days! Beyond my expectations, super happy with the books and the service
The book was quite a hefty one for the price. The photographs were magnificent portraying city scenes at night when human life was absent, giving the places a life of their own.
It just wants me to take my camera phone out and explore the city streets I've in,at night.

Another great book I couldn’t resist adding to my collection from BooksaboutArt. Full of innovative designs, well illustrated throughout, it gives an expansive picture of western architecture. A hugely enjoyable book.
Lovely book, wonderful quality, not read it yet but looking forward to it.

Now a frequent flyer, I've yet to be disappointed, a wholly brilliant concept that just makes sense.
Lovely book with top quality pictures and a wonderful overview of all aspects of Tom’s art.
Also comes complete with a thought provoking introduction from Tom, and a wonderful critique/synopsis of Tom’s background art philosophy from James Fox.
