As an original member of the legendary Independent Group in London in the 1950s, Richard Hamilton organised or participated in groundbreaking exhibitions associated with the group - in particular This Is Tomorrow (1956), for which his celebrated collage Just what is it that makes today's homes so different, so appealing?, crystallising the postwar world of consumer capitalism, was made. With his colleagues in the Independent Group, Hamilton promoted the artistic investigation of popular culture, undertaking this analysis in paintings, prints, and texts, thus setting the stage for Pop art - indeed, he is often called the intellectual father of Pop.
At the same time, Hamilton was crucial to the postwar reception of Marcel Duchamp, transcribing his notes for The Large Glass and producing a reconstruction of this epochal piece for the first Duchamp retrospective in Britain, in 1966. Over the years Hamilton has continued to develop his work, in a variety of media, on subjects ranging from the Rolling Stones to the Troubles in Northern Ireland, from new commodities and technologies to the oldest genres in Western painting.
True to the mission of the October Files series, this volume collects the most telling essays on Hamilton (including several hard-to-find texts by the artist), spanning the entire range of his extraordinary career.

Such a beautiful book for the price
I've cut the sketchbooks open to give me A3 sheets. Love the colours
Top service
Does exactly what it says on the title.
Was looking for quite a niche book and it was a decent price and came quickly. Can't fault the service

Well packaged, arrived quickly, very pleased
Well packaged, arrived quickly, very pleased with books.
I love this book. It's very readable, informative and well written, covering one of the most exciting and revolutionary periods of art history. The author includes glimpses of how the artists' early work fared at auction and the public's reaction to the new art movements in exhibitions.
Well all I can say after my experience is what a great site and service, ordered my first set of books, and through my own mistake they were sent back, this is where they truly shone, having been in touch with them, they helped me quickly get them sent back out, I added more books to the order, they arrived with-in 2 days, perfect condition, perfect delivery. Very very happy.
Would I use again. Very very much so, yes you can buy books anywhere. BUT, would you get the service if there’s an issue. I can’t fault the way they dealt with my issue , even if it was caused by myself. All the books were pristine. A+
I love Books About Art so much I feel conflicted about reviewing them. I have told friends and they are similarly addicted to a thoughtfully curated, wide ranging selection of books that cover all kinds of culture and always arrive promptly, as described. Just don't tell anyone I said so.
Excellent book, well worth the money and in excellent condition. Delivered early than I expected can't fault this company never let's you down, thank you.
A very readable and accessible guide to pivotal and controversial works of modern art. Each movement or time period is explained with useful timelines to provide wider historical context in which to place the artists and their work. Each selected art work is explained, the reasoning behind it, and why is was considered controversial. A really clear and useful guide.
I have only recently discovered Books About Art and have been delighted with the quality of the books on offer at such good prices. I've been delighted with my purchases so far, and the service is excellent too.
