Since the 1990s, German painter Stefan à Wengen (b. 1964) has worked on large series of works that investigate questions of cultural codes and memory. Issues such as the foreign or the strange, death and memory, melancholy, existence, sexuality, anxiety, and the uncanny form the core of his artistic work.
Both the medium of film and reportage photography offer him formal starting points and influence his atmospherically charged paintings. In addition, the venerable portrait genre, albeit always full of confusing factors, plays an important role.
Wengen’s works can be found in public collections such as the Kunstmuseum Basel, as well as in major private collections in Germany, Spain, the USA, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. His Ghost Portraits and The Mission series form the nucleus of this monograph.
