Brian Lane's unique contribution to small-press publishing was begun in the mid nineteen-sixties at Gallery Number Ten in Blackheath, south-east London. This was one of the first artists' spaces in Britain, and alongside its programme of exhibitions and events, there emerged a growing list of publications with poets and artists.
The apogee of this activity was, however, the late nineteen-seventies, when under the imprint of Editions Brian Lane, he issued many of his distilled performances in print. These included, amongst others, Six Portraits of the Artist, In Good Company, index card works, boxes of gathered information, stylised ephemera, and button-badge works made to be worn.
In the mid nineteen-eighties, Brian Lane worked extensively on the seminal exhibition 'The Artist Publisher' and its catalogue with the pivotal first chapter entitled Self Publishing as a Critical Alternative. Throughout the whole project of his work, there is the sense of a printed score to be performed, from the earlier days of experimental music through improvisations on small letterpress printing machines, to the use of photocopier and rubber stamp.
Brian Lane's published works are held in the Tate Gallery Archive.

Great selection, amazing value, fast/efficient delivery. Highly recommend!
Lovely books at a great price, delivered really quickly and very well packaged.
I haven't used this book yet, but as a novice oil painter, it will be very helpful in learning techniques used by the masters, albeit quite basic approaches and styles. It gives step-by-step guidance via illustrated tutorials, basic information such as equipment and the colours to use in each exercise areprovided. What could possibly go wrong?
This is a comprehensive overview of works of art from earliest times until the late 20th century. It's immediately accessible to read and engaging. My only grumble is that many of the photos are small and in black and white. The text and the works themselves merit better treatment, but that would make this already weighty tome unmanageable and prohibitively expensive. I'm very pleased with this book and will enjoy it.
A lovely book, found by chance and given as a gift.
Bought as Present and they loved its unique format
Fascinating and good comparative text and images.
Excellent book, in depth text and plates that I haven't seen before, perfect!
Great book about the man of 60s music
Beautiful book - made a great gift. Thank you x
I bought to wrap up presents but it somehow felt wrong to cut up these wonderful graphic designs!
Great. Rapidio!
Another great read
