The painter and collagist Wilfred Avery (1926-2016) tackled just two subjects in his career: landscape and the male body. A sixty-year investigation into both developed out of his fascination with the unconscious mind as well as an exploration (and acceptance) of his own sexuality. By the end of his life – one led with a rare and intense creative focus – he had unified his two chosen subjects into one compelling whole.
Avery's paintings, neither real nor surreal, were developed from his interest in depth psychology. Coming from a dialogue between the conscious and unconscious minds he created strangely enigmatic images. These exist in a mystical and ambiguous space - a space that both advances and recedes.
Wilfred Avery was born in South Molton, Devon in 1926. He was educated first at Barnstaple Grammar School and then at St Paul's College, Cheltenham where he studied painting with James Salmon (later the Principal of Croydon College of Art). Whilst at Cheltenham Wilfred's growing interest in modern painting was reinforced by a meeting with Paul Nash who encouraged him to look to Paris, rather than to London or New York, for the influences which would subsequently shape his work.

I brought alot of great books from you very interesting by alot of great artists !
As ever, great service from this retailer. Very happy with this and all other purchases.
Just what i wanted
A wonderful, comprehensive survey of the period. A top quality book.
As a type designer, I found the Stenciletter: Dotted Journal With 4 Stencils surprisingly useful. The dotted grid gives enough structure for sketching letterforms while still feeling open and flexible, and the stencils are great for quickly testing modular shapes, spacing, and compositions.
What I appreciated most was how it encourages experimentation without everything needing to feel overly polished straight away. It works well for rough type concepts, pattern ideas, and even early grid systems. The quality of the paper and layout also make it enjoyable to use as an everyday design notebook rather than just a novelty item.
A really thoughtful tool for anyone interested in typography, lettering, or structured visual experimentation.
Excellent outlet for lots of books I’m interested in. Fast despatch, no-nonsense - and Guy is obviously great at running it. A nice new twist on what used to be called the remainders market. Bravo!
I stumbled upon Books About Art by complete happenstance and found three books that immediately found their way into my basket. Guy’s customer service was tremendous! There was a small hiccup with DHL’s delivery and Guy immediately rectified the hiccup without me ever having to contact DHL. I’m counting the days until my next paycheque and my next purchase. Absolutely stellar service.
