Edition of 300 numbered copies
22 drawings by Australian composer Percy Grainger from 1951 and 1952, for the potential Free Music Machines worked on by himself and musician and singer Burnett Cross at that time.
Grainger, a virtuoso Pianist and pupil of Bussoni, had been developing his idea of “free music” since 1900: based on eighth tones and complete rhythmic freedom and unconventionally notated on graph paper. He had experimented using collections of Theremins and changing speeds of recorded sounds on phonograph disks and eventually developed his own instruments.
Graingers experiments with random music composition pre-dated those of John Cage by 30 years with “Random Round” written in the 1920’s. Graingers first experiments used a Pianola “player piano” controlling three Solovoxes by means of strings attached to the Pianola’s keys, this combination was abandoned as it was not possible to create a continuous glissando effect from the Pianola. Grainger started work on a more elaborate but eccentric machine in collaboration with Burnett Cross and his wife, Ella Grainger. The Free Music Machine was a machine that controlled the pitch, volume and timbre of eight oscillators. Two large rollers fed four sets of paper rolls over a set of mechanical arms that rolled over the cut contours of the paper and controlled the various aspects of the oscillators.
The book contains an introductory essay by composer, musicologist and critic Wilfrid Mellers, an erratum bookmark of a poem by the composer Howard Skempton explaining the numerous mis-spellings of Wilfrid Mellers name, and the postscript At Last by the editor of the book, Simon Cutts detailing the precarious history of this project, and its final accomplishment.

great source of books on art.
Fantastic and speedy service
A brilliant book about a nearly-forgotten band, but thankfully this book rectifies that. Written by the surviving drummer and bassist, it is full of stories about their time in Hamburg & touring round Germany & Japan. A must for anyone who loves the Liverpool Merseybeat scene and the hard-driving music it produced.
I’m delighted that I bought a copy of David Hockney’s past icon work. Not many pages but so worthwhile! If only there were 10 stars, I would have rated this publication so highly!
Always exactly as described and delivered within 2 days! Beyond my expectations, super happy with the books and the service
The book was quite a hefty one for the price. The photographs were magnificent portraying city scenes at night when human life was absent, giving the places a life of their own.
It just wants me to take my camera phone out and explore the city streets I've in,at night.
Great value
So well worth buying. Full of interest for Beatles lovers, Easy to read text, well laid out with many iconic photographs. Very please I bought a copy.
Another great book I couldn’t resist adding to my collection from BooksaboutArt. Full of innovative designs, well illustrated throughout, it gives an expansive picture of western architecture. A hugely enjoyable book.
Lovely book, wonderful quality, not read it yet but looking forward to it.
Great gift
Now a frequent flyer, I've yet to be disappointed, a wholly brilliant concept that just makes sense.
Lovely book with top quality pictures and a wonderful overview of all aspects of Tom’s art.
Also comes complete with a thought provoking introduction from Tom, and a wonderful critique/synopsis of Tom’s background art philosophy from James Fox.
