What started as a personal project, photographing a few artists whose work he admired,
developed into a major undertaking when Dennis Toff realised that no single painting or series of images had been produced which attempted to include all of a current membership or group of Painter RA since George Dance's drawings of 1793.

When this project was published in 2008 there were 116 Royal Academicians of whom 39 were Senior and of the rest 40 were Painters, 22 Sculptors and 15 Architects. Toff  attempted to photograph all 63 of the Painters (including Seniors) but perhaps inevitably there were a few who could not be included. 58 are represented here, photographed in their studios with examples of their work accompanied by brief biographies.
