Why do we find the idea of a multi-coloured Parthenon so shocking today? Why was the Eiffel Tower such a target for hatred when it was first built? Is the Sagrada Família a work of genius or kitsch? Why has Le Corbusier, one of the greatest of all architects, been treated as a villain?
This book examines the critical legacy of both well known and either forgotten or under-appreciated high-points in the history of world architecture. Through 70 engaging, thought-provoking and often amusing debates, Jonathan Glancey invites readers to take a fresh look at the reputations of the masterpieces and great architects in history. You may never look at architecture in the same way again!

A wonderful book about the art gallerist Robert Fraser (‘Groovy Bob’), who sold artworks to the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and was a flamboyantly influential figure in the ‘60s world. Harriet Vyner’s book inspired me to write and record an album of songs entitled ‘Robert Fraser’s Groovy Arts Club Band’. This was launched along with an exhibition of the same name at Gazelli Art House, Dover St, London W1. Recently, I quoted the book in my talk ‘Colin Self, the Sixties & Robert Fraser’s Groovy Arts Club Band’ delivered at Norwich Castle on 5th July 2025. ‘Groovy Bob’ is essential reading if you have any interest in the Sixties and that era’s continuing influence.
Arrived very fast, shrink wrapped, clean. Very happy with a sad but beautifully written book. So Happy with Gerhard Richter.
Arrived fast, shrink wrapped ;great book about a great artist. Happy, happy. with a very unhappy book.
I love Breughal and a few years ago I went from UK to Vienna just to see some, especially Hunters In The Snow. So to come across someone who travelled the world to find this great artist's works was intriguing. This is a down-to-earth book, a very personal journey full of intimate thoughts, strange, new (to me) revelations and parallels and a dreamlike quality that nevertheless educates painlessly! I loved it And learned a lot. And only a fiver!! 😃
Excellent book.
Bought for a friend who teaches pattern design. Now buying one for moi!!
great source of books on art.
Fantastic and speedy service
A brilliant book about a nearly-forgotten band, but thankfully this book rectifies that. Written by the surviving drummer and bassist, it is full of stories about their time in Hamburg & touring round Germany & Japan. A must for anyone who loves the Liverpool Merseybeat scene and the hard-driving music it produced.
I’m delighted that I bought a copy of David Hockney’s past icon work. Not many pages but so worthwhile! If only there were 10 stars, I would have rated this publication so highly!
Always exactly as described and delivered within 2 days! Beyond my expectations, super happy with the books and the service
The book was quite a hefty one for the price. The photographs were magnificent portraying city scenes at night when human life was absent, giving the places a life of their own.
It just wants me to take my camera phone out and explore the city streets I've in,at night.
Great value
So well worth buying. Full of interest for Beatles lovers, Easy to read text, well laid out with many iconic photographs. Very please I bought a copy.
Another great book I couldn’t resist adding to my collection from BooksaboutArt. Full of innovative designs, well illustrated throughout, it gives an expansive picture of western architecture. A hugely enjoyable book.
